We’ve been spending the past few days working to secure our website, surveillance map server, and donation portals to the highest standards. Today we completed adding HTTPS/SSL to all of ActivismTech’s web assets. For those interested, the delay was caused by how our surveillance map rendered OpenStreetMap tiles and utilized geocoder information via CDN’s.
We used LetsEncrypt to set up a TLS/SSL certificate on an Ubuntu 14.04 server running Apache as a web server. We also automated the certificate renewal process using a cron job. If you’re interested in setting up https there are two tutorials we’ve recommended in the past from DigitalOcean. One for Apache, and one for Nginx.
